Ali Akbar Velayati, the international affairs adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, recently made a statement emphasizing that. Iran, with or without Russia, will obstruct the implementation of the corridor being created in the South Caucasus with the support of the United States.

Conspiracy instead of an economic project

Velayati described the corridor project as “conspiratorial”, the purpose of which is to change the borders of the region and divide Armenia. He emphasized that this corridor has no economic significance, and that it could turn into a “graveyard for Trump’s mercenaries”, implying military or strategic objectives.

Armenia’s position

An Iranian official noted that the people of Armenia are against the division of their country, and that the Prime Minister of Armenia has also expressed his dissatisfaction with this project during his visit to Iran. This indicates that Tehran and Yerevan share common concerns regarding the possible consequences of the project.

Security threat in the South Caucasus

Velayati warned that the implementation of the corridor could threaten the security of the South Caucasus, a region that is historically tense and has territorial disputes. He added that Russia is strategically opposed to this project, indicating a joint stance of Moscow and Tehran against Western influence.

Regional political consequences

This development underscores the deepening divide between Western and Eastern powers in the Caucasus. If the corridor is implemented, it could reshape alliances and deepen existing tensions. The joint stance of Iran and Russia indicates a regional strategy aimed at countering U.S. influence and protecting their own interests.
